Job Summary
The Safety Specialist assists the Environmental and Safety Managers with tasks related to company-wide regulatory environmental and safety compliance and company growth and improvement in sustainable practices and energy conservation.
- Work with Safety Director to become familiar with basic OSHA, MSHA and DOT regulations. Assist in drafting interpretation, clarification and informational documentation to employees.
- Lead safety meetings, trainings and employee orientations as needed.
- Update safety books for all locations. Compile training materials for monthly safety and driver’s meetings. Create and compile supplemental information for safety training including posters, memos, articles and tool-box talks.
- Track safety performance on a regional basis and communicate to managers the percentage of monthly safety meetings and inspections conducted for use in the safety incentive program. Track injury and accident claims and communicate performance to managers on a quarterly basis.
- Conduct safety inspections to determine compliance with OSHA regulations at ready mix plants. Update safety audit checklist for ready mix plants.
- Maintain SDS inventories for ready mix, packaging plants and mine sites.
- Create signs, labels and other graphics for use in ready mix plants.
- Provide material for safety webpage.
- Evaluate safety programs and policies to continuously improve safety program
- Monitor regulation changes to assist in maintaining corporate regulatory compliance
- Catalogue safety videos.
- Work in both an independent and team work environment.
- Assist in putting on driver rodeos.
- Update and distribute crisis action plans.
- Issue discipline in accordance with company policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; with a safety related background; or, equivalent industry experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- General understanding of industry regulations and ability to find and interpret written government regulations.
- Discuss technical logistical aspects of safety regulations with peers and upper management.
- Attend and participate in periodic evening meetings related to safety program.
- Able to occasionally spend nights out-of-town and/or state.
